Shame & Blame Marketing vs. Inspired Marketing

This year has been huge for me in terms of really owning and loving who I am, imperfections and all.  More importantly, it’s been a pivotal year teaching me who I want to be in my businesses.

I’ve been learning from some great marketers in the last several years.  I realized that although they have great strategies and tactics, I have to be true to myself and how I want to be in business.

I am really sick of some of the “Shame and Blame” Marketing I see.

You know what I’m talking about. We experience it every single day. From big companies to solopreneurs.

The main kind of feeling this type of marketing brings up for their target market is:

“You’re not___________ enough.”

(fill in the blanks with whatever you want.)

  • thin
  • pretty
  • smart
  • rich
  • hard-working
  • good

And, personally, I am sick of it.

My pledge to myself, my subscribers and my clients is that my marketing is inspiring and uplifting. I want people to feel better – to be inspired, motivated – to think bigger and better possibilities for themselves and their world – because of my marketing.

Not to feel worse.
Not to feel shamed.
Not to label themselves as “losers” or some other really ugly labels.

I’ll still be talking “personal responsibility” because that is KEY. But, I won’t be participating in “Shame and Blame” Marketing.

I’m so exciting to be unveiling some work I’ve had done around this! No, it’s not a facelift, a nose job or a tummy tuck. I’ve had some amazing designers doing some work on my marketing, re-branding me with the inspiration I want to convey. And, in line with a book I’m writing about all this, which will include some fabulous entrepreneurs I’ve had the privilege to interview – who are embodying inspired marketing.

Here are two amazing examples of the type of inspired marketing I’m talking about:

Example 1:

Example 2:

What I’d like you to notice is the importance of STORY. I’ve realized the vital importance of story in marketing. I’ve used it all along… in my horse business, my former bath & beauty products business, my Law of Attraction business and now even in teaching marketing. I’ll share more about how to uncover your story in upcoming a special webinar soon.

Don’t worry, you do not have to get an animation studio to help you create something like this. What you do need is great stories and great products, of course. And you probably already have a ton of those.

Isn’t part of being an entrepreneur making the world a better place? It shouldn’t be about shaming and blaming people into buying, but inspiring them to more.

    Hi Maritza,

OMG.. I LOVE that Kohl’s commercial! First time I saw it I got weepy! I’m so grateful we’ve connected this year and am excited to see where your business is heading.

I’ve found that when I stay true to who I am and what I want to do everything works. Literally. My business has grown simply because I’ve made a conscious choice to trust myself.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
    Kim

Kim, I’ve loved connecting with you too!

And, I’m so excited to have you as one of the fabulous entrepreneurs I mentioned in my blog post. I can’t wait to share your very inspiring story…

I love what you wrote and am copying it in my journal! “My business has grown simply because I’ve made a conscious choice to trust myself.”

Love and hugs to you this Thanksgiving! <3

Hi Maritza! Well of course I LOVE this emphasis on storytelling! So much more elegant, uplifting, powerful and effective than shaming and blaming! Let me know if I can support you in any way, Sassy sister!!

Sandra, in addition to teaching the importance of telling your story AND as you are a super-mega-inspiring best selling author, I know you totally get the importance of story!

So excited to share more soon!

      Happy Thanksgiving hugs to you!

Oh Maritza you have such a way with words! 😉

I’m sick and tired of that blame game marketing and the making you feel lost so that they can “save you”‘. The most power transformation happened for me when I starting getting real and being myself with my customers. I owe everything to implementing the principles of relationship marketing and storytelling…what do you know – humans love talking to humans. 😉 Looking forward to the book, keep doing what you’re doing girl, you’re changing lives! – Dre

Andrea, thank you so much!! Gotta love what you wrote: “what do you know – humans love talking to humans.” It gave me a giggle! (and is so TRUE)

Love your brand! It’s so fun and I can totally see YOU in it!

      Love and hugs!

Oh, Maritza! What a delightful way to share your message. Thanks for the reminder. I think I need to tell more stories.

    Blessings to you this Thanksgiving!

Thanks Lydia! yes, I think it’s so important to tell stories in your marketing. Right off the bat, I know that for you, it will be super important to tell the story of why you’re doing what you’re doing. Tell the story of your son’s journey. It will be inspiring and uplifting to others for sure.

And guess what? I’m starting the adoption process for myself! Following in your amazing footsteps… 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too! <3
