Are You a Hypothetical Entrepreneur?

taking action in business

Are you a hypothetical entrepreneur?

Hypothetical is something that exists as a possibility, an unproven idea or theory. I connect with a lot of people who want to start or grow their businesses staying FAR too long in the role of hypothetical entrepreneur.

The fact is you won’t be able to prove your idea until you take action on it and get some results. And yes, the results you get may be good and they may be bad, you may succeed and you may fail.

Actually, let me rephrase that… You WILL fail. The more you take inspired and smart action, the more you will fail and the more you will succeed.

It’s only in taking the action that you will be able to test, tweak and grow your business. [Tweet this]

For a long time I thought about and worried about holding my own riding clinics.

Boticario and me

I wasted a lot of time wondering about the “what if”s and didn’t do it out of fear and uncertainty.

Once I started doing them, I made a lot of money organizing and planning these riding clinics. I brought in famous trainers from all over the world, charged people to bring their horses and stable them in my place. I charged them for taking group classes with the trainers I brought in. I charged people to audit or watch the classes too.

I charged extra for VIP dinners with the trainers and also sold my horse information products.

Eventually horse “swag” was added to the mix…  t-shirts, journals, mugs and custom canvas bags. It was so fun, it was extremely profitable AND it was only through the DOING of these events that I actually discovered where I needed to make the tweaks to make it a better experience for everyone and the most profitable it could be for me.

I lost several years thinking about it and holding “hypothetical riding clinics” in my mind.

I don’t want that for you.

Get out of the Hypotheticals and into Imperfect and Scary Action…

I did a webinar recently and someone asked me all kinds of hypotheticals about starting their business. fear of action

“Well, what do I do if this happens…

Ok, so if that happens, then what..?

How about this other scenario…?”

Questions I’ve heard before from this person, who has not actually started a business yet.

Of course, asking questions, getting educated and informed is important.

I’m talking about the point where you have enough information to stop talking about it and start doing it.

You won’t ever truly test or prove your theories about your business until you actually take action.

Yes, I get it – starting or growing your business can be scary – things you categorize as good will happen and things you categorize as bad will happen.

Just launch…

Recently, I co-launched a new private label brand online on Amazon.

We had coupon codes for 100 people to get a 99% discount on our new product. This was a “family and friends” promotion designed to get honest reviews for that product. On day 2 of the new promotion, we got a flurry of sales.  We were trying to figure out where they came from… and we realized that the coupon code was completely visible to EVERYONE on this giant website!

We quickly figured out how to make the coupon code invisible. Now, our customer service department will follow up with the one person who got 22 of our new product for almost nothing. At least we hope to get one really good review from them!

Was it fun? No.

Was it something we learned from? Yes.

Will it happen again? No.

Are we in the game? Absolutely!

Reality check: What do you get from the good and bad events that will happen…

time flies you're the pilotThe bad events in life and business have always led to the greatest learning and growing opportunities.

The good events always encourage you to keep going and keep growing…

My challenge to you today is to stop sitting on the sidelines as a hypothetical entrepreneur.

If you’re already in business and there’s something you’ve been wanting to take action on, do it. There is probably one area where you’ve been thinking, dreaming, “waht-iffing” and dragging your feet…

Take that big, scary, uncomfortable action.

Because that is what being successful in business takes.

That is where you will grow your business.

In fact, it’s the ONLY place you will grow your business.

I’d love to know in the comments section – where will you take action on a business dream TODAY?

    Love it! Just do it!

I’ve been caught in this trap. We never really know what’s going to happen until we try. The scarier the better!

      Me too Frank!

Nike’s motto, just do it! Great advice Maritza and examples of how you changed your mindset and replaced it with a starter mindset. The results speak clearly and loudly, what an inspiration to share. Though it can seem scary, the scarier thing is all that wondering by hypothetical that wears anyone down in time. That would be exhausting!

You are so right Dean – the wondering, worrying and not getting results of being a hypothetical entrepreneur are exhausting!

The areas I have mastered ( I mean, I’ve got it down, no worries, I’m the expert – and people admire me for it) are also the areas I’ve failed at miserably once upon a time. I think from my worst mistakes have come my greatest areas of expertise. Because there is NO WAY I will ever make that kind of mistake again.

You are very wise, Maritza, and I admire you’re ability to share your expertise so well.

    • Maritza Parra on February 17, 2015 at 12:22 pm

Love that you shared that Jodi! I’ve also found that my biggest fears and perceived “weaknesses”, when I’ve gotten over the fear – have been my greatest superpowers! *doublehighfive*

Powerful info Maritza! Thanks for sharing your oops—a great reminder that taking action and making a mistake is better than doing nothing. LOVE it!
