Whaddaya Mean “I’m Only Giving 50%”?!

Right now, I’m in Portugal for 2 weeks with an amazing dressage riding mentor, Sofia Valença. The fact that I can run my business from anywhere is FABULOUS! As long as I have an internet connection.
Conquisto and Maritza
I’m writing this after taking a grueling lesson where Sofia pushed me past some of my self-imposed roadblocks, that I didn’t even realize were there.
One of the things that surprised me was that after the first day of riding, she told me “You’re only giving 50%.”
I thought: “What? I’m trying the best I can!”
I even felt a little indignant about it. And I thought up some excuses as to why she might think I wasn’t giving my all. (jet lag, lack of mentors in my area, my breakfast, bad hair day, you name it…)
And this morning, I came to the conclusion that she’s right. I’ve only been using about 50% of what I’ve got to give in a lot of areas. Just coming to that awareness, has shifted EVERYTHING.
Just got done a few minutes ago with one of the hardest, most fulfilling rides of my life.
It wasn’t easy. In fact, I wanted to cry. I wanted to give up. I wanted to hop a plane back to the States.
But, I didn’t. I pushed through the yucky feelings, the lack of control, my insecurities and I did it.
I did what my mentor KNEW I could do – though I had no idea I had it in me.
So my question for you today is:

Where are you only giving 50%?
Because there is some really important area where you’ve been coasting, resting on your laurels, giving only 50%. My hope is that this question will help you push through to give more than you think you can…just like Sofia pushed me.

Maritza, you are so right. That is exactly why having a great mentor makes all the difference in the world. We all sometimes see our life from very “upclose” and it takes that special person that can see “our big picture” and with our best interest at hearth gives us the very needed and welcome push to help us re-evaluate and jump forward. You have done it for me when needed it and I am grateful for it. I am so glad you are enjoying your equine-spiritual retreat.

Beautiful photo. Tender and powerful at the same time. And thanks for the inspirational story. Perfect time for me to be reminded to give 100%.
