6 Easy Ways to Create Your Business Vision

6 ways to create your business vision boardThe 2020 Business Vision Workshop is open for enrollment! Click here to see everything you’ll get done during the Workshop here.

Have you ever thought of doing a vision board for your business, with SPECIFIC goals?

What happens when your business feels stuck and stagnant, and it just feels like you’re going through the motions day in and day out?

How do you feel when you aren’t trying to accomplish anything specific and spend most of the day just trying to pass the time dabbling here and there but not focused on any particular goal or outcome?

What happens when your day has no plan and no definitive purpose?

When I feel even the slightest hint of these kinds of feelings I immediately turn to look at my vision board and I’m instantly reminded of my motivations, my goals, and my dreams.

heartA vision board is a visual representation of your reasons for caring about what you’re doing and a vivid reminder of why you are doing them.

Tweet This: Your vision board is a representation of your big why and should make you feel motivated and inspired. If it doesn’t make you feel those things, it’s time to change it up a little.

Building your Vision (in any of the following 6 methods) will help you go from being in your head all day long in your business to allowing your heart to lead you.

heartIt will help you cultivate the courage to do those things that make you feel discomfort, but that will grow your business.

Today I’m going to share 6 ways to create vision boards that will inspire you and keep you focused and feeling great!

Traditional vision board for business1. Traditional Vision Board.

This is my #1 recommended method. Why? Because research shows that using simple creativity and play helps you quiet down the left hemisphere of your brain – the part that holds the INNER CRITIC – and allows you to tap into the right hemisphere of your brain.

The right hemisphere of your brain is responsible for creativity, imagination, innovation and possibility.

Add things that remind you of WHY you do what you do and WHAT you want to create.

A great idea is to put testimonials from your favorite clients on your board.

Another fun thing to do is create a magazine cover with a picture of you and headlines about your desired business and life achievements on it.

Yes! A magazine cover. I’ve used different graphics outsourcer to get some of these done for myself and clients.

Or you can use your own artwork.

Be creative.

Use your imagination.

Have fun with this…

it’s your dreams, your goals, your WHY!

Be sure you allow (and encourage) yourself to feel the feelings of already having these things and experiences in your life right now.

You want to feel those feelings because that’s what will inspire you and pull you towards taking the consistent actions that will help bring those things into your reality.

Tprofit grapho ensure this is your BUSINESS Vision Board, put your actual NUMBER goals there.

For you to look at every single day.

There is nothing better to keep me,  my clients and you on track, than the reality of numbers.

Some numbers to consider putting on your Vision Board to make it your BUSINESS Vision Board:

  • Email List Subscribers
  • Daily Sales Goals
  • Weekly Sales Goals
  • Monthly Sales Goals
  • Quarterly Sales Goals

You don’t have to put all of these numbers, but you should put the most important ones to you.

I have all of these on my Business Vision Board and the one I use most to guide my daily actions is Monthly Sales Goals.

dollar signPublic Service Announcement:

Looking at your actual numbers and planning your goal numbers is VITAL.

Yet, it’s something many entrepreneurs do NOT do.

Numbers do NOT lie.

They will tell you the full truth.

They will tell you when it’s time to push, get creative, try a new type of promotion and they will also reveal to you what went great.

I remember one year when I reviewed the numbers I found a hidden goldmine where many of my best private clients had come from.

Without looking at the actual numbers and where they came from, I would not have pushed in that area more the next year, doubling my income.

profit chartThe #1 thing you do NOT want to do is feel bad when looking at your reality numbers.

This is the ONLY time I’ll tell you to look at something with your head, instead of your heart when working with your Vision.

Do not beat yourself up for not reaching certain numbers.

That is counterproductive!

Numbers are simply INFORMATION.

Did you know that only 4% of people actually write their number goals down?

And only 1% actually review them on a regular and consistent basis?

People who write and review their goals regularly are the highest achievers.

Celebrate when you look at your numbers and you see you are reaching your goals.

If you find you aren’t reaching your goals, it’s time to adjust and possibly pivot.

If you’re exceeding your goals, give yourself a pat on the back and celebrate big time!

Vision Boards keep your dreams in front of you so you take the actions required to make those things real.

Oprah's producer Corny callBefore Oprah’s producer called me to set up my interview with her, I’d put a photo of Oprah on my vision board.

The feelings I felt while looking at that photo were “it will be so great to speak with her and have a conversation about the law of attraction”.

It wasn’t about me getting promoted, which DID end up happening.

It was more about the experience of talking with someone whose career and whose own path of self-growth and transformation I respected.

How to Use Your Business Vision Board for Inspiration:

Once a day (or more if you want to), look at your Vision Board. I do this often yet I’m not perfect either… I have times where I get too busy and days will pass by without INTENTIONALLY looking at it.

When you are intentionally looking at it, imagine the feelings of being in those places, being with those people, having those experiences – as if they’ve already happened.

This may feel a little silly at first but try it.

Hopefully, you will get a little emotional, even teary or excited in your belly, or you may begin to laugh thinking of the fun.

happy goalsYour head might rudely interrupt this and say “Um, excuse me… you’re not with these people, you haven’t done these things yet” and may even dip into thoughts or feelings of “Yeah right… you?”

If that happens, just remember to transition back into your heart.

Into feelings of love, joy, connection, adventure or whatever wonderful feelings your Business Vision Board brings you.

dreams and goals vision box2. Vision Box.

This is almost the same thing as a vision board except instead of putting all of your stuff on a board you put it in a box.

I’ve got a beautiful box with flowers and hearts all over it. You can wrap yours in beautiful wrapping paper or add your artwork too.  Or your kids artwork!

A vision box is a great idea if you don’t want to have your visions, goals, dreams, and your vulnerability out there in the open, and you prefer to keep it to yourself.

How to Use Your Business Vision Box for Inspiration:

You can open the box after meditating and look through the contents for a few minutes, or open from time to time when you feel you need inspiration. Look through everything you collected, and I promise you’ll feel that wonderful rush of enthusiasm come back again.

When you’re viewing what’s in your box, imagine that you’ve already accomplished or experienced what the thing in your box represents, and emotionally experience the feeling of that accomplishment.

Imagine it is ALREADY a reality in your life.

From time to time when you feel you need inspiration, open your box and look through everything you collected.

Again, just like before, you want to add in your NUMBERS goals and the reality of your numbers.

vision journal for your business3. Vision Journal.

This is another option if you want to keep your dreams a little bit more private.

I’ve used small journals with beautiful images on them, super plain ones and fancier ones. It just depends on how I’m feeling when I start a new one.

I’ve also used big beautiful, fat scrapbooks.

I’ve gone totally nuts at the scrapbooking store with these types of things.

What’s great about the Vision Journal is that every day you can write a little blurb at the end of your entry to really cement what you’re feeling.

You can write about how it feels to accomplish your life and business goals and the gratitude and appreciation you feel.

How to Use Your Vision Journal for Inspiration:

Every morning (or a time you choose), take out your journal and write about the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing in your business.

postcardI also recommend that every 30, 60 or 90 days you write out your “Perfect Average Day”.

Some mornings, you may not feel like writing at all.

When that happens, just flip to your latest version of your “Perfect Average Day” and read through it.

Remember to include numbers AND your feelings.

Vision Visualization4. Vision Visualization.

This is something that I’ve just started trying and I love it.

The process begins just like meditation does.

Sit in a quiet room where you won’t be disturbed and get comfortable. I recommend using a timer.

The one on your smartphone will do just fine.

This is so you can completely focus on what you’re doing without worrying that the time will get away from you.

Close your eyes and focus on your breathing until you feel relaxed. Once you’ve reached a calm state, begin communicating with your higher self, that part of you that loves you unconditionally.

Focus your thoughts on those qualities of yourself that you want to be the next evolution of you.

For example, if you feel an insecurity about speaking in public, focus on the new you during this visualization.

Focus on a ‘You’ that is confident speaking in public, excited to be there, where your speaking is flowing, where the audience is responding to you, where everything is going wonderfully.

Focus on how wonderful it feels to be at such a speaking in front of a group, giving them incredible value and receiving their love in return.

You can do this for any quality about yourself you want to improve or anything you want to achieve.

meditation faceAnother example, if you want to get better at sales, visualize yourself asking for the sale from a place of offering your help to solve a problem your prospect has, and being unattached to the outcome whether they say yes or no.

Your job is simply to communicate your value powerfully and with confidence.

Visualize it as if you are achieving right then and there.

Most importantly feel how it would feel to be you having that quality you want to evolve into.

That quality you want to cultivate… achieving that thing and living that experience. Focus on the emotional results of the experience during your visualization.

A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more.    ~ Rosabeth Moss Kanter

vision desktop5. Vision Desktop.

Number five is a vision desktop.

This is an image that you put on your computer desktop.  Again if you’re really private, you can use something like this if your office is private.

There’s all kinds of image manipulation applications:

  • Pixlr
  • Canva
  • PicMonkey
  • PowerPoint
  • Keynote
  • Photoshop.

Create a collage of the things you want to feel and create in your business, and then set it as your desktop, your iPad background or your phone background.

If you want to get even fancier, you can also set your desktop so that it creates a slideshow, changing your inspiring images. You can add the same things as you add to a regular Vision Board. Photos, artwork, inspiring quotes, and of course, do not forget your numbers.

This is NOT my favorite method because you aren’t using your hands and creativity to create your Vision Board

BUT it is better than nothing!

Vision Audio6. Vision Audio.

Number six is a vision audio.  Yes, a vision audio! This is something I’ve done a few times when I REALLY wanted to stay focused on some big goals AND I’ve also recommended it to people who are super resistant to creating a traditional Vision Board (which I think is most effective.).

I’m giving you permission to create this in the very best way that will be effective for you.

Hey, if you like to learn and be entertained with audio more than visual mediums, create a vision audio.

Record yourself as if you’re experiencing the things you want to create, or as if you just finished experiencing them.

You could start out with, “I’m so happy that…”

For example, if you want to visualize yourself as having done the best and biggest speech of your career, start out with that, “I’m so happy that I completed my talk. It was so well-received. I got a standing ovation. The video is going viral…!”

Those kinds of things that make you feel great and excited about taking the action towards those goals and reaching those goals.

familyHave kids?

This can work even better!

If you’re a mom or dad, your kids are one of your HUGE WHYS.

Creating a business that provides for them and also inspires them to know they can do the same if they choose to is POWERFUL.

Ask them to record a heartfelt message to you that motivates and inspires you.

Ask your partner or spouse to do the same.

If your big why is your parents and being able to care for them, ask them to do one too.

Then, as you’re working out or taking a walk or traveling, listen to your vision audio.

It may feel a little funny recording it at first, but if you listen to lots of audios as you go about your day, and that’s how you like to learn and experience new things, try it.

heartThe most important thing is to be enthusiastic and speak from your heart when you do the recording and when you’re describing your big why.

So to recap, the six ways to keep your big why front and center so you stay laser-focused in your business:

  • Vision Board
  • Vision Box
  • Vision Journal
  • Vision Visualization
  • Vision Desktop
  • Vision Audio

I’ve given you a lot of options to choose from.

Pick the vision board method that excites you the most and DO IT.

Make sure to incorporate looking at it (or writing in it, or listening to it depending on which type you choose to do) into your daily routine.

If the Vision Box is going to be under your bed and you’re never going to look at it again, don’t do that one.

Remember, you want actually experience and feel the feelings and emotions associated with ALREADY HAVING THESE THINGS in your life. This will work miracles in your business and life and will help you stay motivated and inspired to move forward powerfully every single day.

Love this Maritza! Particularly the Vision board desktop and audio version. The thought of adding more to my plate with a vision board makes me break out in a cold sweat, but as a desktop digital version or simply record it in my iphon are AMESOME ideas. Thank you!

    • Maritza Parra on December 12, 2014 at 9:05 am

LOL Karen, especially this time of year for mommies it can be crazy! Let me know when you try one of the quicker versions what happens! I believe it’s super important to do a representation of what you’re creating and why! (And if you do the audio version, you can use clips of your adorable little boys!)

I’ve been doing vision boards since I was 13. And, I love that you are teaching people how to use them for business. Rock on!

    • Maritza Parra on December 13, 2014 at 1:46 pm

Cathy, that is so wonderful! I absolutely love using them though I didn’t really know anything about them when I was growing up – I think all kids should be taught this stuff. And entrepreneurs, too 😉

Love your name and how you’ve branded your company with it!

  4. Dean Patino on September 2, 2015 at 9:45 am

Visualization has worked for me for decades. These approaches open up more ways to do it on the way to the all important “big why”. Maritza, thank you for always sharing such inspiring and actionable information that leads to more success along the entrepreneurial journey!

    • Maritza Parra on September 17, 2015 at 11:42 am

Now you have 5 other ways to try it. though I love visualization, it can be super effective to change it up from time to time!

I get behind in my scrapbooking, so I finally did a vision board on a cork bulletin board. I really like this as I can keep it in my office and look at it throughout the day. I also started a vision board on pinterest, which was real easy to do and I can add to it conveniently. I like how you have given many different options to meet the needs of various working personalities. Thanks. Lori

    • Maritza Parra on September 17, 2015 at 11:44 am

Lori, that is a great suggestion that I know a lot of people have done, creating a Pinterest Vision Board. I personally love having it right in front of me in my office or somewhere I will see it daily, especially with actual NUMBERS for business that you can change out and get inspired and motivated by because they are right there in real life… on a daily basis!

Wow, this is a mega-post. I’m book marking this so I can come back and try out each idea one by one. I’ve always struggled creating a traditional vision board. I never would have considered all these other options.

    • Maritza Parra on May 21, 2016 at 10:21 am

Jodi, This is just like a “meditation practice” – one size definitely does not fit all so I wanted to give all the different ways people can get clear on what their business means to them so that they stay laser focused on their WHY and creating exactly what they want. For me, a Vision Audio has actually been super cool and a fun (& effective!) addition to my toolbox because I love to consume audio content.

  7. Kathy Lundborg on March 21, 2016 at 10:39 am

Great variations on a vision board, AND it’s inspired me to add to mine. I had not added the number goals to mine. The number of Email subscribers is a big one of mine and I haven’t had it on my board…until now! I heard your words on multiple levels and I’m listening! Thank you Thank you!

    • Maritza Parra on May 21, 2016 at 10:25 am

Kathy, I love it! That is one of the big (and MEGA important) things we entrepreneurs need to keep track of, yet so many do not. What you measure can grow. You see what works and what doesn’t and you can adjust your focus, time and energy accordingly. What you don’t measure, well, you don’t know what’s really working and what’s not working.

  8. Amber Hurdle on March 21, 2016 at 11:03 am

You know I LOVE a vision board! And this year I added numbers to it, so I appreciate that part of this post. Since not everyone is super visual, like me, I like the alternative ideas (like audio) that can keep EVERYONE moving forward towards their dreams!

    • Maritza Parra on May 21, 2016 at 10:26 am

Amber, yes, the Vision Audio has become a favorite for me, though I will say it took a while to get used to hearing myself. The ones that work best for me are the ones where I get enthusiastic and feel excited about my goals and dreams.

  9. Lian on March 24, 2016 at 10:54 pm

Thank you for reminding us that there are so many ways to create and be creative in our process of creating our business. It doesn’t have to be all ‘businesslike’ of charts and formulas and strict with business plans and deadlines. It’s the inspiration of our heart and our dreams. I love all of them and each way allows me to find new things and ways to create.

    • Maritza Parra on May 21, 2016 at 10:32 am

Lian, LOVE that you talk about the creative part of this. Brene Brown has a fantastic quotes about creativity that says:

“Creativity embeds knowledge so that it can become practice. We move what we’re learning from our heads to our hearts through our hands. We are born makers, and creativity is the ultimate act of integration.”

A looong time ago, I almost went to medical school. I took all the courses Organic Chemistry, Physics, etc and it was PAINFUL. One way that I really embedded the knowledge and got to understand it is by using creativity while studying. I used colored markers and even painted out equations and what they meant to me. I did REALLY well and even took the MCAT. I decided not to apply to med school because it was either that and only that for the next decade OR my horses and my passion for horses won. YET, that experience of using creativity to turn knowledge into something I really understood has served me well.
