30 Days of LOA – What comes first, the product or the list?

product vs list building

This episode was inspired by a wonderful listener question:

“Maritza, I have struggled for an unnecessary length of time with the chicken and egg issue of lists. In order to have a list, you need a product that your tribe has told you they want. In order to sell the product you need a list. Ughhhhh how do you know what to create to get a tribe so you can ask them what to create!? It has been maddening for me.” ~ Faydra

Mary focused on the product first. In this episode I share the journey of 2 entrepreneurs, Mary and Abigail.

Abigail focused on the list first.

Both started to grow their online businesses by leaving their job. They had some savings to help them with the preliminary investments. This is the story of what happened to them.

They both started the same way:

However, the big difference in their focus created very different results. Want to know the results?

Hint: Your list is people. With hearts, souls, dreams, pain, wants and needs… (Tweet This:) Building a #relationship with people has always been the best #business #advice.

Your email list is the #1 asset your business will ever have…

Creating this parable was so much fun AND it seems to really help people get the importance of building their email list, I had an explainer video created about it.

Thank you, Cynthia! That’s my goal, practical tips and inspiration for sure!

Maritza, I love Mary and Abigail’s stories. I absolutely want to be Abigail.
Best take away of the day for me: my success starts with people and my list community are “people”

Rita, I’ve seen people do both and it’s a much more difficult, uphill climb when you’re coming from Mary’s focus… I might have to write and illustrate a little story about these two… 🙂

Maritza, in the world of online marketing you bring our humanity back into the conversation with this post. Building relationships takes intentional work and doing it online takes time and energy and the results speak for themselves. Great work you are doing here!

Thank you so much John, I appreciate that, especially from a heart & soul-centered entrepreneur like yourself.

Maritza, I love the story you created for this episode. List building is an area I’ll be giving much more attention to in 2015.

    • Maritza Parra on November 26, 2014 at 9:20 pm

Thank you Jodi! I’m going to create a fun parable out of it!

  7. […] Make building your list a focus in your business. Don’t just say “oh, it’s not going so well” – if that’s the case, then do something else! For example, if you’re just using blogging and social media, do a webinar, do content upgrades like you see all over my show notes and blog posts, ask your existing subscribers for questions and then answer them in your content – engage them and then ask them to recommend you to anyone they know who wants your expertise, get offline and start building your list offline, think differently and do more. GREAT case studies. I agree, with list building, however, I think for the case on Mary who puts a lonely link saying opt in for my updates or whatever, she may assume that is also list building. I can say, it took me a while to come around to the list building before the product why- product is totally within my control and timeline for delivery. List building strategies, less so. I know better now, wish I knew it earlier.

I think you’re so right Trudy! Mary thinks she’s list building – great insight and I’ll add that next time I tell their story!
