What I Think About Glenn Beck Speaking at Podcast Movement

Glenn Beck Podcast MovementRecently, the producers of Podcast Movement announced Glenn Beck would be one of their keynote speakers. There was a lot of discussion about it, some people refunding immediately, others talking about not agreeing with his beliefs / persona, others super excited – reactions were all over the place.

I’d already been seriously thinking about talking more on my show about what I stand against, rather than always being positive.

Some of the things I stand against include:

  • haters (as opposed to constructive criticism)
  • intolerant judgers
  • people led by fear and negativity

I’m very clear that I’m not going to do any good in the world by hating the haters and judging intolerant people. That’s not to say I don’t slip into hateful thoughts or negativity or judgment. But, when I find myself there, I pivot as quickly as I can into giving people the benefit of the doubt and trying to look at the situation – as much as I can – through eyes of love, through finding the lessons for me, rather than looking at it through the eyes of fear.

The best thing I can do in the world (and for my business) is do more of what I’m good at. Uplifting others and helping people believe and do more for themselves and their businesses than they even think is possible for themselves.

When I get angry and offended, I’m less able to do what I’m here to do.

This episode is my unfiltered thoughts that you can’t make the world a better place by hating the haters or being intolerant of those who are intolerant.

You can’t make the most impact in the world and in your business by closing yourself off to the possibility of exchange and communication.

We all have things to learn from each other, including those who have different ideas and opinions.

I love Michelle Y. Talbert’s reaction to it. She’s got a podcast called Her Power Hustle and posted on FB that although there seemed to be some backlash, she would be going to the event to learn and network with people. (Couldn’t find her FB post but it was something to that effect, which I loved!)

So looking forward to meeting her and other people who are willing to put aside their own belief systems to learn and grow, even when they don’t necessarily agree.

To be successful in business and in life, the #1 thing you must protect is your relationship with YOU.

The “inner being” You. The “higher self” You. The God part of You.

You mess that up when you get offended, angry and closed off.

I also love this from Blaine Hoffman when I posted in a private FB group about possibly deleting the episode. He sums it up perfectly:

FB post

Exactly and beautifully said!

If I refused to interact with people I disagree with, I’d live in a bubble by myself!

Love more, fear less.

And come to Podcast Movement because you’ll learn a ton from the speakers (including me!) about spreading your important message to the world in a bigger way.

I would definitely be going anyway, even if I wasn’t speaking. As I mentioned in the episode, I don’t know much about Glenn Beck and what he stands for or against. I do know that if I’ve heard of him at all, he must be doing something right. And no matter whether I agree with him or not, I’ll learn something and I can’t wait!

Maritza, I love your post. I think you are so right. We need to be open minded and listen with good will and respect. Then we are ready to make a decision about how we feel about the subject, the content as well as the delivery.

Right on Ann! That’s what I’m going to do with all the speakers I get to listen to at the event. I’m sure I won’t agree with all, or even most of them, but I’m also sure that I will learn something, but only if I’m open to it.

    Thank you Maritza!

You are so welcome Jared. I loved seeing you and Dan’s responses to those who were upset. They were measured, respectful and kind. So much goodness!

Maritza, thank you for saying this. I don’t know much about Glenn Beck because, like you, my mission is motivate and inspire so I have to be mindful of my energy level. There’s a place for all of us and we each have something to contribute. If we refuse to listen because of intolerance we will also lose the gift.

Maritza, thank you for bringing up the haters. If we could solve one behavioral problem in society, this ranks at the top.

    Thanks for this!

I appreciate you sharing your heartfelt words about this Maritza. Ever since I was a kid my parents instilled in me if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I’m grateful to them for that and so many other gifts they raised me with. Hope you and all the other speakers and attendees enjoy a productive and wonderful conference!

At the end of the day Glen Beck is nothing more than an entertainer (much like Howard Stern, Frank Kern, etc). Absolutely fine if you hate him but I don’t think its a valid reason for anyone to cancel their Movement registration…considering all of the positive opportunities that come out of the event.

Glad you brought this up and out. I just borrowed a car and didn’t realize who was on the radio then i heard it was Glenn Beck. I’ve heard him before a few times. While there may be many things that I don’t agree with him, I definitely wouldn’t label him as a ‘hater’ just because we have different views. He actually is a very religious person who does not hate, but may not be in sync with many.
I prefer to listen and learn from anyone.
Too many label someone as a hater if they have a different view. Makes me think that those who would cancel going may be intolerant.

    Hi Maritza,

I love that you’re brave – able to stand up and not join the society of closed minds. Open debate and exchange of ideas is very American. It’s sad to see most people aren’t brave enough to encourage openness and respect. They are worse than they claim Beck and others who disagree with their opinions or perceptions of one sided reality.

Thank you fir sharing this, Maritza! Glenn Beck is largely misunderstood and overly judged by attacking and intolerant hypocrites. He’s a caring family person who wears his heart on his sleeve and means well. He leaves himself open to attacks on purpose. The venom that is spewed in his direction often comes from anti American radicals who want to dismantle the Constitution and family values. Glenn is a compassionate listener and wants to help people. His sponsors want to sell stuff. Go figure. People need to actually hear what he is saying. I can’t support every theory I hear him make, but he makes me think for myself.
