Profitable ListBuilding: Real Life Example #2

number 5_thumbToday is an example to ensure you really get that your “bait” is about what your prospect really wants and not about what you think (or know) they need. Even if you KNOW what you’re offering is EXACTLY what your prospect needs – it’s probably the last thing they really want… feeling confused?


Hopefully, this “before” & “after” from some work I did for Jeff Herring will help clarify what I mean…

Jff Article TemplatesJeff is an excellent teacher of Content Marketing, he helps people get tons of free traffic to their websites (and to their Ultimate Optin Pages!)

When we met 5 years ago, he had been building his list with 2 templates he called his “Article Marketing Templates”. He’d collected a list of about 1,500 subscribers and was making $20,000 per month.

Pretty awesome, right…?

Yes! He did great with that – but over the last several years, there’s been a big shift in building your list. He noticed that his optin rate started slowing down. By this time, you’ve probably heard me say that you can’t build your list in the same way that you used to. Your free gift must be focused on what your perfect prospect really wants.

Jeff knows that when entrepreneurs get more content out there bringing more website visitors, your website can get a steady streams of new prospects and customers. So he was offering prospects what he knows they need, article templates so they can write short, targeted pieces of content to spread all over the internet. He marketed it as a way to get over writer’s block..

  • How can I get over my writer’s block?
  • How can I write more?

That’s probably the LAST thing they were thinking of – and what he was marketing to – which began to dampen his response after the initial “gold rush” of the internet days several years ago!

What his prospects ARE waking up at 3am in the morning worrying about is:

  • How can I get lots of high quality visitors to my website?
  • How can I stop depending on Google for my website traffic, new prospects and sales?

We changed his Irresistible Free Offer from focusing and offering his templates to focusing on and offering a Special Traffic Report. This allowed him to get many more new excited subscribers onto his list community who wanted the outcome of his work. The Special Traffic Report is a way to do the “big reveal” of what they really NEED (content templates) inside of the report.

As the internet has changed and it’s become much more important to be thoughtful about your Irresistible Free Offer – Jeff has continued to build his list to a huge (and very profitable) community!
