Courage & Attitude: Create the Life You Want…

I found this amazing woman on twitter yesterday… Someone tweeted about her and I followed and found a Grandmother with Attitude… Ruth Flowers.

She didn’t think her life was over at a certain age, she didn’t accept the limitations placed on her by other people, she’s grabbed life by the horns and is doing exactly what she wants…

The following is from Ruth’s website MamyRock.com

Ruth Flowers, 69-year-old, is the matriarch and the hippest English deejay of our time.

I have had a very lively youth, I used to go to balls all the time, I loved to dance, but then came the old age, pension, but above all boredom… I started looking for something more… One night, my grandson, of whom I’m very close to, celebrated his birthday in a nightclub in London. And he told me that I could join them. When I arrived, the bouncers didn’t let me go inside. It is true that I didn’t really match their usual clients (laughs)… I finely managed to entered… and I was dumbfound…there was such an atmosphere!!! It was so different from the parties I used to go when I was young. There was a real osmosis between the lights and the music, it really drove me!… It made me feel so much younger!

This night shattered my view of things but above all the way I saw my life…I had a lot of free time, I was on pension you know… I talked to my grandson about it, he thought I went mad. Now I think that I am ready to make everybody move their a** on the dancefloor (laughs).

So my questions to you are… What limitations have been placed on you by other people that you can break? What will you do today to live the life you want?

This is a woman after my own heart. I am a young woman who loves what she does and is not planning to stop anytime soon. I am not a grandmother, I am a mother to several generations. I am not a mother in law, I am the other mother. I keep young by being interested in life and being close to all those young people who constantly teach me “what is new and exciting in the world”.
3 cheers for Ruth Flowers, her spirit of adventure and her talent for enthusiastically think outside the box. Thank you for bringing us this. Fun and inpiring.

Wow this is great! I am a grandmother, too and I have so much fun going to the park and playing on the equipment with my granddaughter, Moriah. All the Moms are standing around talking to one another and missing the opportunity to interact with their kids. Because I am the only adult playing, Moriah and I are never at a shortage for friends to play with. Children love to have any adult watch and play with them. The sad thing is that I was one of those moms standing on the sidelines telling my girls to go play. What JOY I have learned from Moriah! THat is never to late to have fun. I have taught Group Fitness classes for the past 30 years and my goal is continue to teach for the next 40 years!!! Way to Go Ruth for showing us all are dreams can always be realized at any age!!!!

Courage and attitute and no concern about living up to (or down to?) society’s expectations. And lets not forget the grandson who invited her in the first place to join his young friends at the party, without seeking his peers approval. Courage and attitude run in the family, as well as independent thinking. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Love it. Thank you Maritza

    Daniela ~

I really like what you said – I keep young by being interested in life and being close to all those young people who constantly teach me “what is new and exciting in the world”.

For most of the 80’s and 90’s I worked with teens as a therapist and loved the constantly fresh perspective. The cool thing is we do not have to lose it when we keep in contact with those younger than us and keep that spirit inside ourselves…

This is really inspiring, being 37 years old (37!) I have to bear comments and looks from people because I choose what do do and how to live independently of what is expected by society for women over 30. Having said that I feel it´s also important not to go to the other extreme, that is, because I want “to look” young I´m going to only give value to youth and imitate what young people do (I sometimes have seen this with people drinking alcohol like mad… well… I don´t feel that´s very intelligent). I think it is about having the freedom to be yourself as you grow up, whoever you choose to be, without limitations, and the good thing is that the older you get, the wiser you become and the more choices you have, and I prefer to celebrate life instead of limiting it.
