[Q & A] What are the elements of online success?

Recently, I got this subscriber question from Rich in Texas:

“With so many programs & ways to succeed online WHY do so few make any money online? What is the most effective way for a beginner to make their 1st dollar online?”

First, I’d like to say that there are a lot more people succeeding online than you think. They’re just not talking about it, they’re quietly and consistently building their businesses and enjoying the results. And yes, there are many different ways to create your online success.

The reality is that the majority of people are not willing to do whatever it takes to be successful. I’ll touch on the top 3 reasons people do not see online success (and more importantly, what you can do instead!)

Right now, I’m going to compare online success to health and weight loss. Although we know EXACTLY what makes people healthy and will help them succeed in losing weight, why are most people not successful in this area?

Simple. They are unwilling to do whatever it takes. They are unwilling to make the effort to engage in exercise and/or they are unwilling to change their eating patterns to healthier ones.

There are about a million different eating and exercise plans out there. Many, many of them will work – but only if they are followed.

It’s similar to the different types of online businesses that have the POTENTIAL to be successful. But success will only come if they are followed and implemented consistently and persistently.

The one thing I do know for sure is that in any of these online business models, list building is KEY.

My top 3 reasons more people don’t see success online.

(and what to do instead!)

1. You’re Impatient.

You don’t plant a seed and expect it to immediately pop up a plant, vegetable or flower. Online success isn’t just putting up a website and expecting “build it and they will come”. When you decide to start a weight loss plan, it does not automatically ensure you will lose any weight or get any healthier.

Lots of people decide to start an online business and follow one business plan. When they don’t see immediate success, they get discouraged and move on to another type of business, never getting momentum or clarity on the first one. (This is also commonly known as “bright & shiny object syndrome” and is lethal to your business)

What to do instead: Make sure you follow the advice of someone doing what you want to do. Not just a theorist with no real world experience. Also, make sure you are not in “need”. Have some savings stored up before you put all your eggs in the entrepreneurial basket and quit your job. When you NEED to sell, you will repel success. Bright and shiny object syndrome will be your default setting because you feel desperate.

It’s much better to keep your day job, or get a part-time job WHILE you build your business (and hopefully your list which is the one things that will give you long-term freedom)

2. You Don’t Welcome Failure.

Another reason many jump from business plan to business plan is because you become easily discouraged. To be an entrepreneur, you must cultivate RESILIENCY. You must not allow yourself to be easily discouraged. You must absolutely know and WELCOME failure. Yes, WELCOME FAILURE.

Most people will do anything to avoid failure. When it does happen, and it will, guaranteed – you beat yourself up. This only serves to make you less confident, less willing to take more risks. Less willing to put your unique voice and products out there.

What to do instead: As an entrepreneur, be sure to look at your failures and find what went wrong, what could go better AND what are the blessings, learning and gifts within that failure.

3. You Don’t Protect Your Energy As Much As You Would Protect a Newborn Child.

Yes, your energy, your mindset, the things you allow into your mind and surroundings really MATTER.

Would you allow a newborn child to be around a bunch of negative energy? Would you speak to them and beat them up verbally the way you beat yourself up for not being an online success the first time out?

No. You would protect them, encourage a positive environment to give them the best chance of growing up to be successful and confident.

Look at your surroundings. Are you truly setting yourself up for success? Do you have reminders of your business goals? SPECIFIC goals? Do you write them or look at them daily?

Have you moved away from watching negative media? Or are you still listening to all the “doom & gloom” programming? Are you protecting yourself from negative and disempowering conversations? Are there people you want to start protecting your energy from?

What to do instead: Create an empowering morning personal success ritual. Set yourself up for success. This can be motivating and inspiring and will help you move through those times where you just want to give up. (and they will happen!)

The most effective way for a beginner to make their first (of many) dollars online is to find a proven plan that works, create an environment that supports your success, set specific, measurable goals, take action towards them daily, cultivate stick-to-it-iveness and learn from your failures so they transform into stepping stones of success.

In the comments section below, let me know if you’ve experienced any of these things that have kept you from the success you deserve. And, more importantly, what will you do differently today and tomorrow?

Maritza, so glad you shared this question and the wisdom you provided to address it. Very power 3-part answer, really appreciate it and completely underscore every word. I found each “What to do instead” to be inspiring. You surely practice what you preach Martiza, thank you!

Thanks Dean! I know this from my own experience going through it all in different businesses and from coaching other people to launch and grow theirs. These things can be insidious AND they can be easily overcome with some awareness!

This: “Make sure you follow the advice of someone doing what you want to do. Not just a theorist with no real world experience.”

I love all of your advice, but as a fellow coach that has had to undue damage from theorists, that stuck out!

Amber, I think of it almost like learning to ride and/or train a horse from someone who learned in in a book! Yikes… disaster in the making!

Wow, this whole article describes me last June, especially Shiny Object Syndrome. I kept going after different ways to make money because they looked more appealing (or because a friend would steer me in that direction), which caused me to lose focus on what I was doing. I would be going along fine in one thing, then start another thing, and finish neither!

Great article (and a great reminder to get back to my work 😉 )

    • Maritza Parra on October 6, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Paul, it’s been so cool to see your evolution in the self-development space AND to hear how you’re positively affecting people’s lives. THAT is the best reason to get over these common mistakes….

Love this article Maritza… not only identify the problem, but offer some practical advice (steps) to overcome! Thanks for the great refresher!

    Keep ’em coming!!

    • Maritza Parra on October 6, 2014 at 1:23 pm

Yes, I like giving out some ways to counter-act the mistakes, not just talk about what they are. Thanks Frank!

This post hits home! It’s so easy to become distracted by new opportunities, rather than focus on nurturing the existing ones.

You also make a great point about energy, which is critical to success. For me, it has always been a challenge to balance my physiologically needs with my obsession to keep working on a project late at night. Sleep is something that usually takes a back seat to my business priorities – but somehow I’ve got to change that!

Thanks for the great insights in this post!

    • Maritza Parra on October 8, 2014 at 3:54 pm

Darcy, focus is huge for staying on course and so is sleep! Maybe a mid-day nap as a break?

  6. Celest Horton on October 6, 2014 at 8:09 pm

This post was just what I needed to hear. Thanks Maritza. I’ve been listening to too much noise from all the ‘experts’ and I’ve decided to back up and listen to those who have truly proven success.

    • Maritza Parra on October 8, 2014 at 3:56 pm

I think it’s also important to listen to yourself, you are the expert in you and what you want your life and business to be. It’s difficult sometimes though, because of all the noise. Choose one proven path and one proven mentor at a time I think is best.

I really love the part of protecting your energy. I don’t think I have ever heard it put that way. What a great tip. I find myself doing do many things it is exhausting. I am going to remember and practice this. How original !

    • Maritza Parra on October 8, 2014 at 3:57 pm

Maureen, I think this might be the MOST important one, actually. Protecting your energy and creating a positive, opportunity focused environment is key.

  8. Justin Williams on October 6, 2014 at 11:40 pm

Awesome stuff as always, Maritza! Encountered people who gave up early on their online business and what you have stated here is really the core things you need to know in this industry. Amazing! 🙂

    • Maritza Parra on October 8, 2014 at 3:57 pm

Thanks Justin! You’re a great example of “whatever it takes”!

  9. Dawn on October 7, 2014 at 5:26 am

Wonderful post Maritza. Shiny object syndrome is something that can impact and infect us all – if we aren’t constantly on guard. In an effort to learn and improve we can easily get distracted by the shiny objects then lose focus and veer far from home or success.

  10. Charlie Poznek on October 7, 2014 at 7:06 am

“You don’t welcome failure” – such a great point!! This is still something I’m working on, but being able to view failure as a learning opportunity has been so helpful in growing my business.

    • Maritza Parra on October 8, 2014 at 4:41 pm

failure is essential to big success! I always have to remind myself of that too!

  11. Jaime on October 7, 2014 at 4:11 pm

    Love it Maritza!!

I keep hearing “Fail Forward” this week — you know, like when you fail, make sure that you learn from it and move forward. Thank you for giving us another opportunity to look at our failures as stepping stones towards something greater!

    • Maritza Parra on October 8, 2014 at 4:42 pm

      Love that Jaime, Fail Forward!

  12. Anthony Tran on October 9, 2014 at 7:15 pm

Great articles Martiza! I definitely know what you mean about the shiny object syndrome. That was me for many years. I was impatient and wanted things to grow quickly and then started new projects without letting the other ones develop. Nowadays I’ve learned to be more patient and instead of changing my project I just adjust my approach to my current business.

  13. Christine on October 17, 2014 at 5:24 pm

Number 3 is definitely what I am not doing. Mornings always seem like a rush and definitely do not include an empowering morning personal success ritual. Energy levels seem constantly low. I think I need to re-evaluate some time management strategies and energy boosting strategies. Maybe a topic of another blog post Maritza?
