How List Building Pays You in Your Business
In this episode, I want to share with how I put together a product launch I did while working on the start of the Easy Online Marketing podcast. It brought in $4,845 for just a few hours of my time. The reason I want to share this with you is to show you how you can instantly leverage your email list and turn your product ideas into profits in a very short time.
I launched my new podcast with only 3 episodes and got such a great response that I decided to do a 30 day challenge to really kick things off. There are a few reasons why I thought a challenge was a great idea. First of all I love sharing the principles of spirituality and mindset with marketing. I believe mindset goes hand in hand with taking lots of uncomfortable, scary action.
Secondly, when I’ve done these types of 30 day marathons in the past, I’ve had huge results and added lots of new subscribers to my email list. I also wanted to capitalize on the first 8 weeks of my podcast.
When your podcast does well during the first 8 weeks of broadcasting, iTunes will put mention you in the “New & Noteworthy” category. This gives a lot more visibility to people who would otherwise probably never hear about you. It wasn’t easy to create 30 days of original content in a row that you hope inspires people. But the response and excitement it generated made all the effort worth it.
Niche your list building offers down until it hurts.
Let’s take a minute or two to talk about selecting your target market and the importance of being super specific. Ok, so it might not “hurt” but most people act like niching down and getting super specific will hurt them. In this business I know that I have several super-niches.
a super-niche is an extremely focused, sub-niche targeted topic.
Some examples for me in my marketing business are:
- Mindset – This can even splinter off into smaller super-niches: Self love, Money Mindset, etc.
- Law of Attraction
- List Building
- Content Creation
Some examples in my horse business are:
- Iberian buyers/breeders
- Dressage weekend warriors
- Dressage competitors
- Horse Training
- Dealing with difficult horses
- Overcoming a fall
One of the reasons you want to get so specific is that speaking to and serving these different super-niches is very different. You’ll give very different advice and inspiration to each. People will not opt in for general information any more. There is so much information overload online now. Most people simply search for what they want to know. It’s up to you to make your email list building gift offer extremely targeted, easy to consume, and organized in a way that your subscriber will be able to use it and benefit from it right away. If you want to be effective and get results, you need to speak directly to your target audience.
How super-niching worked with the 30 days of LOA for Entrepreneurs series.
For most of the episodes, I had a specific download that listeners could subscriber to my email list to receive.
Examples of these are:
- The Abundance Wheel
- The Cocooning Process
- Meditation for Entrepreneurs
- 3 Ways to Add Story to Your Marketing
- Business Vision Board Prompts
- Your Best Friend Avatar Worksheet
- Reverse Engineer Your List Building Gift
These are all extremely targeted and specific. They aren’t for everyone. They excluded more listeners than they included. But for those that it was a fit, they opted in to receive the gifts. Most of these were also one-page, very easy to create, very easy to consume gifts.
As we approached the end of 2014, I realized that one of the top downloaded opt ins I had was the Business Vision Board Prompts. It was 3 days away from being the very end of the 30 days of LOA for Entrepreneurs podcast series. I decided to create a special offer for a Business Vision Board Workshop. I held the workshop online in mid January.
Tickets to attend and build your workshop were $19. I wanted anyone to be able to participate so I made the cost very low. And I added a limiter, which always results in more sales. The limiter for the $19 tickets was December 31, 2014 midnight EST. Tickets doubled in price to $38 after that time.
I created “ads” in the last few episodes of the 30 days series to promote the Business Vision Board Workshop. I put up a simple sales letter myself, and I attached the sales letter to my paypal account. I decided not to go through Infusionsoft and my merchant account, which would have required some technical savvy (aka Tracy, my tecchy VA). Remember, I just had the inspiration for the idea and took quick action on it. I didn’t have time to delegate it out. I wanted to ride the momentum the 30 day series had given me.
What happened with sales:
1/2 off tickets at $19 before December: 137 sold for a total of $2,603
Full price tickets sold at $38 after December 31 midnight: 59 sold for a total of $2,242
Grand total $4,845.
The deliverables were printable Vision Board worksheet pages plus a calendar where you put your list building and income number goals. I held a live workshop in mid January that lasted 90 minutes where I walked people through doing their Business Vision Boards. Is this nice income for a few hours of work?
Yes! I was paid in advance to create a brand new product. And a few of the attendees also reached out to me and became clients of my higher ticket offerings!
This is possible for all different types of products in different types of super-niches, to create new products that can later be added to autoresponders, and content so that they sell on auto-pilot.
Can you do this?
Yes! Last episode, I shared what you need to do to create your online course. One of those things you need is your email list. Don’t think “oh, I don’t have the numbers you have.” That is just an excuse and it’s easy to create those. Also, you can create a higher priced product rather than a very low cost one.
When you use the strategy of super-niching and continually asking people to become part of your email list, you can do this too.
